Love your job, not a company

2–3 minutes

Overcommitting one’s soul to a company in the hope of being appreciated for one’s effort is a mistake that many people make. This is because companies are not designed to appreciate individuals for their efforts, but rather to maximize profits for shareholders. Please don’t get me wrong, I still urge you to love what you do, or there is no need to even continue that work, but don’t give your soul to the company. Here are a few reasons why it is a mistake to overcommit one’s soul to a company.
Most of the time people create companies for profit, not for volunteering or to support anyone financially. Few CEOs or owners may have a true passion, but what I’ve seen is that some lose their passion mid-way as the money starts to flow in. The owners start to compare themselves with their Forbe friends and want more profits so they can compete with their friends. When that happens, guess who pays the price, the small employees working hard to earn a leaving. Once an owner is removed from the original passion, the only thing left for a dedicated employee is his or her love for his or her job. The owner at this moment is no longer capable of recognizing and appreciating the hard work and dedication of their employees. They are focused on their bottom line and their survival. As a result, employees who overcommit themselves to a company are often taken for granted and can be replaced easily when it suits the company’s interests.
Secondly, giving ourselves too much to a company can lead to burnout and mental health issues. When an individual invests all their time and energy into their work, they risk neglecting other aspects of their life, such as their relationships, hobbies, and self-care. This can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression, which can harm both their personal and professional life.
Lastly, being too invested emotionally in a company can limit one’s career growth and opportunities. When an individual is fully committed to their current employer, they may be reluctant to pursue new job opportunities or take on new challenges, which can prevent them from gaining new skills and experiences. This can limit their career growth and put them at a disadvantage when it comes to advancing in their field.
In conclusion, overcommitting one’s soul to a company in the hope of being appreciated for one’s effort is a mistake that can have serious consequences. It is important to remember that companies are not designed to appreciate individuals for their efforts and that it is important to maintain a healthy work-life balance to avoid burnout and mental health issues. By maintaining a healthy perspective on the role of work in our lives, we can achieve both personal and professional success. Remember to put yourself FIRST.
